Chobits

Hideki Motosuwa’s life isn’t all that great. He’s 19 and has just failed to get into University. Because “all the good Universities are in Tokyo”, as Hideki says, he moves there to attend cram school with the intention of retaking the entrance exams. He also has no money and works at a bar 7 days a week to get by. Having lived on a farm, he’s also a bit out of touch with modern technology.

Computers are now built in the form of humans (both male and female), and are known as Persocoms. They can do anything for you, not just access email and the Internet, such as the newest Persocom who works at the bar with Hideki. Naturally, Hideki dreams of owning a cute female Persocom but has no hopes of being able to afford one. That is, until he stumbles across one tied up in the trash.

Hideki’s luck has changed - he soon finds himself the owner and teacher of Chii, a beautiful, powerful but not-so-useful Persocom. She seems to have lost her data and can only say one word, but she’s super-cute and enjoys learning, often by imitating whatever is on hand.

Chobits is not only the story of Hideki and Chii, however, but of a future in which computers are integrated into society and often treated almost as people.
